COB (Chip on Board) Lights act as architectural spotlights. They provide a concentrated, intense beam of light (usually around 24° to 36°) that is perfect for highlighting specific areas like artwork, TV units, or creating dramatic "scallop" patterns on walls.

Downlights, on the other hand, provide a much wider beam angle (up to 120°). They are meant for general ambient illumination to light up the entire room softly and evenly. A good modern ceiling uses a mix of both.

If you want flush, recessed lighting (like standard COBs and Downlights), yes, a false ceiling is required to hide the wiring and the body of the light.

However, if you have a bare concrete ceiling, you do not need to build a false ceiling just for lighting. You can explore our Surface Lights or Cylinder Lights, which are specifically designed to mount directly onto hard ceilings while maintaining a premium aesthetic.

For standard residential ceilings (9 to 10 feet high), 7W to 12W COB lights or downlights are more than sufficient.

If you have a double-height ceiling, staircase void, or a commercial retail space (12 to 15+ feet), you will need to upgrade to 18W, 24W, or 30W fixtures so the light has enough power to reach the floor without losing intensity.

Flickering is rarely an issue with the LED chip itself; it is almost always caused by a cheap, un-isolated driver (the power supply) failing to handle voltage fluctuations.
